The first major change is the diameter: The new releases quantify 47mm wide and an impressive 18.8mm high. Smartly, however, the lugs are short and curved to allow a snug fit to the wrist. Of the 18.8mm of height, 8mm of this is down to the sapphire crystal alone. This is seemingly no mean feat: getting a flawless finish on a Sapphire component of this thickness, curvature, and essential consistency is actual challenge. Corum accomplishes this unusual effect by beginning with a block of crystal clear and squeezing it into a bubble-like contour, before polishing to complete clarity. To get the most out of the feature, the designers of this Corum Bubble watches, chose to match the timepieces using “Op-art” (optical-art) dials. These smart patterns provide the sense of movement, as well as depth and shadow. Though level, the dials have a degree of existence. There will be two Corum Bubble Op-Art watches available in a limited run of 350 pieces each: The Corum Bubble Drop watch comes with a brownish PVD-coated case plus a “ripple” effect dial; the Corum Bubble Sphere2 is coated in blue PVD and includes an “atom-inspired” pattern on the dial. Both watches use Super-LumiNova on the hands. The Op-art dials have been inspired by the work of Victor Vasarely, a French artist of Hungarian descent and the creator the Op-art movement. The magnifying sapphire crystal has such an affect on the flat dials they appear to be sharply domed themselves. With this particular design leaping out of the watch, it’s a lot easier to understand why this crazy contraption has so many lovers all over the world. Both watches are fitted with straps wrapped with leather, with a buckle fitting their personal case finishes. The straps begin at 24mm between the lugs and taper to 20mm at the buckle.

Corum has created a unique version of the Ti-Bridge for Only Watch 2013. Each side of the case features red gold inserts engraved with a motif reflecting the theme of Only Watch.

Amongst the watches in the upcoming Only Watch charity auction will be a unique Corum Ti-Bridge 3-Day Power Reserve. The key feature which distinguishes this from the regular model is are the hand-decorated red gold inserts screwed into each flank of the case.  Both inserts are hand-engraved with an allegory depicting snakes and Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, set against a frosted background with leaves. The motif is a nod to the goal of Only Watch, which is to raise funds for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Another unique feature of this Ti-Bridge are the hands, markers and power reserve arrow, which are plated in red gold. These provide a strong contrast with the dark grey dial, which frames the horizontal movement secured by four struts.

Only Watch 2013 will take place on September 28 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. – SJX
